Hi Guys,
I am a Nikon user. Currently I have experienced Lightroom 2, Aperture and Nikon Capture NX2 these 3 photo editing softwares. I felt the aperture and lightroom are basically the same. What I mean is they pretty much does the same thing. But I love the Capture NX2, due to I felt the color I see in Capture NX2 is more real. The reason I say this is because now I am using lighroom 2, and when I open a NEF file, everything seems not right. The color produced from lightroom and aperture doesn't look the same with Capture NX2. Has any of you notice this? Or is it just me?

Another thing that I love about the Capture NX2 is that it has 2 options allows you to select an area, one is of course the retouch option (what you do is paint over the area you want to select) and another option is it has this circular selective tool which allows to select anything in the circle with similar color scheme, and you can adjust everything inside that circle, like color, brightness, saturation etc. Lightroom and Aperture can not do this, you can only use the retouch tool to paint over the area you want to adjust which can be very time consuming sometimes. If you don't use retouch tool, any adjustments you made basically affects the whole image.

Now, my problem is that to me, Capture NX2 is much better than Lightroom and Aperture. But why does everyone in the whole world is making this big thing that Lightroom and aperture is the editing software that you must have and trying to persuade people how good they are and so on. I mean, if they are good, then sure, broadcast it about, let everything one know. But I just don't see they are as good as Capture NX. So am I missing something here? Like is there really something that really good about those 2 softwares that Capture NX2 can not do? Or is there something magi that hides deep in that I don't know about? If there is, please, I want to know about it. Like photographic wholesaler always conduct training on lightroom and aperture, and they want people to buy them cause they say it is good. But nothing similar has been done for capture nx. What software does all of you use? I am not trying to criticise any softwares here, but I am just curious that am I missing something here. That is all. Please help me with this. Thanks alot guys.

You will find a difference in the files you import into Capture NX2 as it uses the Nikon proprietary software and imports your pictures as you have set them up on the camera i.e vivid. Lightroom and Aperture on the other hand import then as straight RAW files without the changes your camera made.

Not everyone in the world uses Nikon equipment hence not everyone uses Capture NX2, Pentax, Canon and nearly all other manufactures use their own import system and their own format i.e. .NEF for Nikon. Because of this not all programs can read the files, Lightroom on the other hand can read them all.

There are plugins for Lightroom and Photoshop to do the circular selection tool you mentioned such as Viveza.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, you right, lightroom sort of bypass all the in-camera adjustments and bring it back to a default kind of looking photo. I mean l like that way lighroom and aperture are making adjustments to the photo in it's own library or catalogue, which will not affect the originals, wheres capture nx is not like that. Yes, you right, there is an option of getting the Viveza from nik software. The overall cost will be twice as much as getting capture nx alone... But... yes, not everyone is a Nikon user, I guess something like lightroom and aperture which will bring the imported photo to default is the best way to suit all different camera brand users. Thanks alot Ron. Do you know the best place to get Viveza in Adelaide?
